WONDROUS & GRITTY RUGS

Updated: Aug 28, 2023

Rugs can be a game changer on how a room looks and feels. Rugs can sit in harmony with your room and they can make a statement by adding an element of surprise.

When selecting an area rug, make sure that it extends under all the key pieces of furniture in the room. In a living room, for instance, all of the furniture should be on top of the rug. If this isn't possible, it's okay to have the front legs of major upholstered pieces on the rug and the back legs off. However, all the legs of smaller pieces should be on the rug.

In a dining room, the rug should be large enough for the chairs as well as the table. A good rule to follow is that the chairs should be on the rug, even when they're pulled out from the table.

Ideally, you should leave the same amount of floor space on all sides of your rug. Give yourself anywhere from about eight to 24 inches on all sides. Eighteen inches is the most common space, but in a smaller space, you can get away with as little as eight inches. The main goal is to have the rug centered in the room.

Here are some ways rugs can enhance the overall aesthetic of an interior:

1. Define Spaces: Rugs can help define different areas within a room, especially in open-concept layouts. By placing a rug under a seating arrangement or dining table, you create a visual boundary that separates one area from another.

2. Add Texture: Rugs come in various materials like wool, cotton, jute, or sisal, and they can introduce texture to an interior. Textured rugs can bring depth and interest to a space, particularly in rooms with predominantly smooth surfaces.

3. Provide Comfort: Rugs offer a soft and comfortable surface underfoot, making them ideal for areas where people often walk or stand, such as living rooms or bedrooms. Thicker, plush rugs can create a cozy atmosphere and make the space more inviting.

4. Inject Color and Pattern: Rugs are an excellent way to introduce color and pattern into a room. They can serve as a focal point or tie together different elements in the space. If your room has neutral tones, a vibrant rug can act as a statement piece. Conversely, a patterned rug can add visual interest to a more monochromatic interior.

5. Enhance Acoustics: Rugs have the added benefit of absorbing sound, reducing echoes, and improving acoustics in a room. This can be particularly beneficial in areas with hard flooring surfaces, such as wood or tile, which tend to reflect sound.

6. Balance the Design: Rugs can help create balance in a room by providing visual weight and grounding the overall design. They can anchor furniture arrangements, ensuring that pieces feel connected and cohesive.

7. Create Visual Flow: Rugs can also be used to guide the eye and create a sense of flow within a space. By placing rugs strategically, you can direct attention to specific areas or lead the eye from one part of the room to another.

8. Personalize the Space: With the vast array of rug designs available, you can choose one that reflects your personal style and adds a unique touch to your interior. Whether it's a vintage Persian rug or a modern geometric design, rugs can showcase your personality and taste.

When selecting a rug for your interior, consider factors such as size, shape, material, and the overall design scheme of the room. By carefully choosing the right rug, you can elevate the look and feel of your space while adding functionality and comfort.
